Library OneSearch improvement and times for LLR dissertation/exam support

Please find below these updates on Library OneSearch and various support which LLR is offering to students beginning dissertations, projects and exams.

Library OneSearch: tab added to allow searching by journal title

A new Journals (by title) search tab has been added to the main Library OneSearch search interface, allowing publications to be searched for by title (both print and electronic). All standard fields are indexed in this search option (so it is also possible to search by ISSN, Publisher and other values). The new ‘Journal (by title)’ search option will appear shortly in all three versions of the LOS search widget – on the LLR web site; in NOW and in the student portal.

This change was brought about in part by comments from students and staff from SST; if you have any other feedback on this search tool, please pass them onto me and I will add them to the feedback register. For those who have yet to see the new tab, visit los.ntu.ac.uk.

LLR dissertation/project support:

LLR are supporting those currently writing their dissertations or preparing them over the summer, with 1-2-1 advice surgeries running throughout May. These will be held each Tuesday between 1-2pm (in the seating area by the main desk), and there is no need to book an appointment. JF is very happy to arrange appointments outside of these times as required.

Take 5 – reducing exam stress:

As part of the ‘Take 5’ campaign to reduce exam stress, LLR are taking part in various schemes to promote study skills literature and help with referencing. See http://www.ntu.ac.uk/student_services/study_support/exam_stress/events_timetable/index.html for more information, as well as various promotional materials which will be advertised.

IEEE Xplore

IEEE Xplore have introduced some new features to the platform, including enhanced abstracts, more options to utilise citations and an improved article delivery service. For more information please feel free to read http://www.ieee.org/publications_standards/publications/subscriptions/newieeexplore/index.html

Journal of Chemical Science (RSC)

You may be interested to learn that this title – which was not originally going to be added to our subscription package by default, and which we only had access to for a limited amount of time – has now been added to the standard NTU package we subscribe to. I know that a few people had asked about subscribing to this in the last journals review, so it comes as good news that we don’t need to find any extra money in order to do this. As an extra point of information, the RSC are currently re-negotiating the subscription model they will be offering in the future, and more news regarding our future access will be provided on this once available.
